Wilson County Animal Control: P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We can never stress enough how shelter dogs are the most loving animals ever, and patience and understanding are all you need. Just like people, dogs need a comfy place to sleep, where they can feel safe and recharge. Their own bed helps with mental development and reduces stress and anxiety, which in turn results in a happier, healthy adoptable dog.

The 2023 P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant help us with what we try to achieve every day.

How many pets did this grant help?

We believe this grant will help 100% of all the adoptable dogs that come through our Animal Control.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Romeo and Izabelle, a bonded pair, came to us as strays, scared and not sure what was happening.

Romeo would stay at the back of the kennel and Isabelle would sit in front of him as if she were protecting him. With a lot of patience from our kennel techs, they finally opened up, and oh my, what a loving pair they were!

In the mornings they would come over to the office and stay with us. Our office is also like our indoor play area in the kennel; we made it as close to a home environment as we could. We put the beds by the each of the desks so that any dog who comes over can choose whichever bed they want.

Izabelle and Romeo chose the director’s desk and would stay with her all day. We here at Wilson County Animal Control all had a lot of happy tears when we were able to find a very loving adopter who also worked from home and fell in love with them. She said, “They are exactly what I am looking for.”
